THE KITCHEN TIMER METHOD FOR TIME MANAGEMENT

If you haven't yet read lauren graham's book, please do. (don't worry, I'll wait while you amazon prime. Back? Cool) It's chocked full of advice, like this thing called 'the kitchen timer method.' Contrary to the name, it has nothing to do with cooking & everything to do with productivity & time management. It's based on the Pomodoro technique, & although the creator Don Roos applies it to writing, it can really be applied to any task at hand. I've been practicing this method for the past couple of months and I can honestly say it works, so of course I'll give you the deets!

THE BREAK DOWN:
This article breaks down Roos' rules step by step; I've broken down my variation of things.

1// Obviously the first step is to get a timer. An old fashioned kitchen timer, a timer app, (what I use) any kind of timer really, as long as you can set it for sixty minutes.

2// Make a plan of what you need to get done & how much time you're going to spend doing each thing. (i.e. thirty, forty five, the full sixty..) Write it down so you have a tangible reminder.

3// During the time you've set, don't look at your phone. (I don't turn my wifi off, but that's always an option.) Turn it on vibrate, don't look at it. Turn on soothing music. I break the rule of only instrumental; whatever kind of music helps you focus is what you should listen to.

4// GO, GO, GO! Write, budget, whatever the task is, do it. Do it for however long it takes, do it until the timer buzzes. If you're not finished, it's okay. Take a break. If you have to finish it, set the timer for another round. If it can wait, add it to the list for the next day. A little goes a long way!

I sometimes have a hard time focusing on finishing a task, especially if it's on the computer. I get distracted, go down the pinterest rabbit hole, or sometimes just feel a bit of 'I don't feel like doing this right now,' so I've found this method incredibly helpful for productivity! You can actually get things accomplished when you sit down & focus?? WHAT?? Revolutionary, I know.

Have you tried this method? Tell me what you think of it!

RECENT FAVORITES

Oh hey, hi! It's been a hot minute since I shared some recent favorites....

// ASOS Petite is consistently wonderful & this Missguided jumpsuit is no exception with its culotte style & simple floral pattern. I bought it for easter & I've been reaching it for it ever since. I'm a sucker for versatility!

// Sticking with the one pieces... this fun romper has been in rotation a lot as well & I love everything about it- the colors, the pattern, the way it makes me feel like I'm on a beach somewhere.

// I just wrote about this nyx eyeshadow & Y'ALL. It's so fun & summery & PRETTY.

// The buzz about this facial spray has been going on for quite some time, but every time I went to try it out for myself i's been sold out. CRAZY. But, on a recent ulta trip I was able to find a travel size, so I grabbed it. I can easily say it's now one of my favorite ways to get a little facial refresh throughout the day. (once you get past the less than pleasant rose smell... I like rose flowers, but I guess not rose beauty products LOL)

Tell me what else I should add!

A Dewy Makeup Routine For Spring/ Summer

Lately I've been doing something I didn't know I'd ever do: opt for a simpler makeup routine. Sure, I still love to go all out, but for everyday I prefer something easy & simple. & lately I've been really loving a glowy look, right down to a shimmery highlight.

I got a few new NYX products recently (not sponsored I JUST REALLY LOVE NYX) & with the help of a few other products, I've created a bit of a formula:

// Instead of a full foundation, as of late I've been opting for just primer + facial oil. The primer gets a tad coverage in, & the oil really sets a tone for the rest of the makeup as well as leaving my skin feeling fresh, without the heaviness of a foundation.

// I discovered this eyeshadow in the color mermaid & I'm a tad obsessed. It's emeraldy but wearable enough that you don't look like an 80s reject. I like to blend a bit of gold shadow in the crease for some dimension, and if you REALLY wanna go bold, slide on a bit of this purple eyeliner on the top & bottom lids.

// I'm not sure why but I'm kind of obsessed with highlighter. Trying out new ones, playing around with the ones I have, etc. & a shimmery, dewy glow is my current fave.

// Lash Sensational is still the mascara I swear by, with its feathery & voluminous look. After brows, I finish everything off with a dewy finishing spray!

Easy peasy.

What kind of makeup routine do you opt for in spring/summer?

HOW TO ROCK A ROMPER

Rompers (or playsuits for you fancy UKers) have sort of become a spring/ summer staple, & for good reason. Besides the ungodly amount of time it takes to get situated in the bathroom, (say that sentence out of context) rompers are wearable & effortlessly chic.

But how to figure out how to wear them? I was wearing this romper out recently and my best friend made a comment about how they never seem to look good on her. I BEG TO DIFFER. Anyone can rock a romper. Here's what to look for:

Fit
Fits can vary from person to person, & with something like a romper you want to make sure that it fits right in the right places. (that may seem like a duh, but it's especially important as it's all one piece) Look for looser fits if you're uncomfortable with a certain area, & I always like to bend over to make sure the bottom isn't a drastically short fit from that angle.

Cut
Going along with fit, every romper cuts differently on different bodies. Look for cuts that hit just at your midline & don't hit weirdly on your chest.

Pattern
Certain patterns are bolder than others (like the one I've opted for) & you should make sure the pattern won't offset the fit. You know when someone walks into a room and all you see is PATTERN BAM? If that's happening when you look in the mirror, it's prooobably not a great idea. If you do opt for a bolder pattern, choose minimal accessories.

MAKING FRIENDS IN YOUR 20S

If you think about it, making friends as a kid can be pretty easy. The big world of school allows for a cast of characters bound to become friends you bond with, sometimes for years. But what about once we're suddenly grown up & we find ourselves clueless on the inner workings of making new friendships? What then?

I can't say I have loads of different friend groups now, but I've definitely gotten out of my comfort zone and expanded. Here's what I've learned so far:

Putting yourself out there is scary. Scary & weird. Not everyone is everyone's cup of tea and you won't mesh with every single person you meet. But you'll find that by opening yourself up to new experiences you're enriching yourself & opening yourself up for new relationships.

Real life isn't like social media. You might be doing a 'duh, Kaeleen,' but for some people this is a radical concept. Real life is real life. We can't hide behind perfectly pretty instagram filters, so why try? Be 100% real life you when meeting new people & the outcome will almost always be better.

You need to actually be social in order to have a social life. If you're like me & would rather give up coffee for the entire week than set foot in a club or bar, it's okay. Those aren't the only places to meet people. In fact, if you think about your hobbies & the things you're passionate about, there's about a 97% chance there's a local club for it. Google (or search meetup.com), make a plan, and SOCIALIZE! (& for all my fellow introverts/ anxious people who are going ??????, here's a good article to help you. It's geared toward networking but can still be implemented for any social sitch) For me, I've found my church is also a great opportunity. I'm not telling you to go to church, but if you do already, utilize it!

When you find your gang, you'll know it. It'll come naturally. You'll laugh more & love more, and you'll care less about what others think of you. It's like pretty much everything else in life; when you know you'll know!

Give A Petite A Jumpsuit

Jumpsuits are SO having a moment right now. I love the cool, effortless vibe of them, & the fact that more of them are becoming petite wearable with culottes.

This strapless suit from f21 is spring set with its stripes + belted detail, and a kimono tops it all off!

WHAT'S IN MY BAG | CHANEL DUPE?

I'm a nosy gal, I like to see what other people have going on in their wardrobes & their bags, so I've decided to do a classic 'what's in my bag post'. (JK I really just wanted to show off my new bag)

Anyway, first let's talk about the bag a bit. As you know from this post, I'd been eyeing a blush colored crossbody & finally ordered this quilted one from f21. Couldn't it be a little Chanel dupe? I like the size pretty good; for me I need something that isn't too big on my petite frame but still holds all the essentials.

(see the segue there?)

What's in the bag:

Eye Essentials
Sunglasses are a must, yes? I like to keep a pair in my car & another in my bag, you know, for good measure. (not because I break them easily, no way) I also keep a thing of Refresh eye drops because between allergies & every day contact irritation, my eyes are always dry & these drops help A LOT. (not sponsored, just obsessed)

Beauty
Looking from the outside in, this category is probably what most of my stuff is. oops? & before you ask, why yes, keeping three lipsticks in slightly different shades in at the same time are extremely important. My hands + lips are like the Sahara most times, so keeping eos & hand creme on hand are essential, as well as sanitizer because GERMS. I like keeping a perfume rollerball with me in case I need a touch up or *gasp* forget to put on perfume...... One last beauty essential is oil absorbing sheets because my t-zone tends to go crazy.

Everything Else
My wallet, duh. (that's currently getting fat with receipts... yikes) I MUST ALWAYS have some sort of gum on hand. I chew a lot of gum. I'm currently obsessed with juicy fruit's starburst line. YUM. I like to keep earphones with me in case I decide to turn on netflix or music in public, (it happens to the best of us) I won't be bothering people. (I currently have apple's special iphone 7 earphones, but I also really like these ones for my laptop.)

TELL ME: What bag are you currently carrying, & what's in it?

In Rotation | Scoop Neck Mini Dress

Sometimes you need a good, fun, casual dress, yes? A dress that'll take you from class/ work to coffee to dinner with friends. For me, that's what this plum dress does. (& it has POCKETS!!!)

It's casual enough to dress up with a kimono or blazer but strong enough to stand on its own, & it's good to have those kind of basics in rotation!

MINDFULNESS TOOLS YOU NEED

I can't stress enough the importance of mindfulness & taking time to be still & present. Obviously it's not an anxiety cure-all (if only that existed) but it does help tremendously. The more aware of mindfulness I am, the more aware of myself I am. The way I nourish my body, nourish my relationships, the way I treat life.

Meditation Apps
If you've been around here for a bit, you know I'm big on meditation & its benefits. I'd say it's the first step to take in being more mindful. Meditation allows you to ground yourself & focus on the present. Calm is my favorite app for this!

Books
Not necessarily self help books, but ones that are actually helpful. My sister just sent me this one and though I've only just dived in, it seems like a good read.

Candles
WHAT CAN I SAY ABOUT CANDLES? Scents have a huge impact on our mood. It can literally create memories. That's probably partly why we love the smell of pumpkin so much; it reminds us of the holidays, home, & good food. Candles also set a tone for the setting and are almost essential for well being, as well as aromatherapy. I've just bought this essential oil diffuser & I'm LOVING it.

Mantras
I feel like mantras kinda get a bad rap for being cutesy sayings neatly hung on walls. While that can be true, setting a few mantras as intentions can actually be extremely helpful when it comes to mindfulness. It centers the mind & becomes an action. I have a couple mantras I repeat nearly daily, and I also look to pinterest to find new ones.

These are just a few of the tools you can use to start setting mindfulness intentions. You'll start to see you know yourself & others better, are more centered and in tune with your body & with God (or your higher power)  and overall balanced!

THREE THINGS TO DO FOR A PERFECT WEEKEND.

Ah, the weekend. A little source of rejuvenation. Here's how you can get the most out of it:

Digital Detox
There are plenty of benefits to doing a mini digital detox- so many that I'm thinking I'll have to try it out for myself! We don't even realize how active a role screens play in our daily lives, to the point it feels weird when our treasured phone isn't by our side. Treat yourself this weekend to a digital free day, or even a few hours. Stop & smell the roses!

Start a New Project
As much as Beyonce seems to get done in 24 hours, for many of us it's just not enough time to do all the things we need to, much less start anything new. So, take some time when you're not plagued by other priorities & get a new project going. Is there a recipe you wanna try? Craft you wanna DIY? Pour some wine & GO.

Grab a Friend
Weekends are just better with friends, yes? Grab one (or your whole girl gang!) & have a coffee date, see a new movie, or even go for an old-fashioned sleepover.

What do you like to do for the perfect weekend?

WHAT TO WEAR ON EASTER

Instead of a typical Easter dress, this year I'm opting for a jumpsuit. I've actually ordered this one & I'm anxious to see if it works. I usually go for pastels, but I'm thinking I can opt for a bright cardi or statement necklace!?

Anyway, I've gathered a few dress + jumpsuit picks that I really like & are perfect for that insta snap.

Are you feeling the jumpsuit vibes or do you stick to dresses for easter?

TULLE.

(bear with me... still trying to get used to iphone fashion photography)

Is it just me or is there some kind of magic in a tulle skirt? Flirty, feminine & pretty, a carrie bradshaw regular. (I've never actually seen sex & in the city so I almost feel wrong name dropping. Sorry carrie?)

BUT sometimes they can be a little intimidating & unwearable, yes? That's where a simple tee can come into play, styled one of my favorite ways- chic-ly knotted off to the side.

Suddenly wearable. BRB, gonna go twirl.
