Trending | The Newsboy

Bakers boy, the newsboy, the Hilary Duff. A hat so great it needed many names. 

The last time the newsboy was super in, it was circa 2003, Hilary was the disney queen & brought those babies to life. (according to me) I, wanting to be just like her obviously, tried to pull the look off. Unfortunately, my prepubescent head was even smaller than my adult head, & I looked like an alien. The trend died. I forgot about it all. 'I'm not a hat person anyway,' I told myself reluctantly.

Enter the year 2018. & with it the resurrection of the newsboy trend, & I've taken full advantage. 

How it can make any look so polished, I'm not sure. IT JUST DOES.

Skincare Tips | Keep Your Skin From Drying In Winter
Winter Skincare Tips

Late winter can really do a number on your skin. The drying out, flaking... it's not exactly a cold weather perk. Luckily, things like exfoliators & facial water are your new BFFs when it comes to winter skincare. 

Let's talk some tips I've learned from trial & error:

Skip The Toner
Or at least lessen the amount you use it. For my combination skin, I've found that toner can actually dry me out more. so instead, I opt for refreshing rosewater that's a little gentler. 

Oil (& Mask) Up
Facial oils are essential in winter as they lock in moisture & are super hydrating for your skin. Same goes for masks: the smoother the ingredients, like rose, (rose is just key, it seems)  the more hydrating & soft. I do a mask at least once a week- a tip I swear by! 

A no brainer, obviously. But your lips need a lot of exfoliating love too! If I don't do a little coconut oil + exfoliant concoction, my lips are SCREAMING for moisture, & no amount of lip balm can save them. Do yourself a favor.

A friend once told me that overalls are a "Kaeleen signature," & looky here, it's still true in 2018. I'm always on the hunt for a good pair (if ya fellow petites have found any lately-- hook your girl up!) and I love finding new ways to wear the ones I already have. 

Take this trusty pair of shortalls. They've been in rotation for quite some time, but obviously in the winter I can't wear them without some sort of leg protection. 

ENTER TIGHTS. I've seen a good shorts + tights look on pinterest about a thousand times, but I didn't even wanna think about trying to pull it off. But, fashion is about risk taking, am I right? Turns out I'm a fan.

Self Care Is More

It's currently 9:30 am. I'm at starbucks (typical) nursing a decaf (not as typical-- who am I??) mocha & trying to get my stuff together, as they say. Because coffee may not solve all your problems, but it sure does help.

I haven't been the kindest to myself these past few days, & no amount of bubble baths & coffee & yoga can change that. Sure, it can help with the anxiety & overwhelming feeling that you're going to die any second, but if you're not kind to yourself through the hard times, none of the self care & pretty bath bombs matter.

Self care isn't just a list of things to do when you're feeling sad or a well-typed out pinterest quote. Sometimes it's changing your lifestyle & how you react to the lemons life gives you. There's a post out there on tumblr somewhere that's like 'Do you think God ever gets sad when you don't love yourself? Like, I worked so hard on you..' WOW, real.

So, self care.

Sometimes self care is turning off your phone, tuning out social media, and going off the grid for a couple days. Sometimes self care is stalking the social media of strong women you admire, getting inspired more by the minute.

Sometimes it's making yourself get out of bed & face the day.

It's telling yourself positive things even if you barely believe them.

It's asking a friend how they are & truly listening, it's remembering to see the beauty, it's living.

Outwardly you can be the strongest person in the world, seemingly living your best life, but if you don't feel it inside, & aren't kind to yourself, it won't matter in the end. Eventually the hatred will run you down.

Treat yourself like your closest friend. We would NEVER tell our friends half the stuff we tell ourselves. Be that best friend to yourself.

Of course, don't discount fizzy baths & face masks & rose, THEY WORK WONDERS. But remember to tell yourself having bad days is okay, it doesn't make you a bad person. & don't tell yourself anything you wouldn't tell your bestie.

One of my goals for this year was to try & transition to all cruelty free makeup & beauty (I'll do a full post eventually!) so if that's something that's important to you, we're in the journey together! Not only is it better for animals, it's better for the earth as well.

2// Pick an organization to donate to
Even five dollars helps, and it's something immediate that goes straight to the source. (My tip when donating is to go straight to the source, or if it's a gofundme make sure it's a reliable one-- check for reviews, etc) The Dreamers are in serious need of support!

3// Be kind
It's that simple. The world needs more kindness. Be it.

What Happens When You Let Go

Letting go of any negative things/ thought patterns is something I've been needing to work on, & I think I really did last year. It's human nature to worry, to compare yourself, to hold on to grudges or burn bridges. But getting caught up in those things is one of the worst things we can do, and it creates a toxic environment within yourself. 

So, what happens when you start to let go?

You Stop Worrying So Much
Hi, I'm Kaeleen, & I'm literally always worrying about something. What can I say, I HAVE ANXIETY. I still worry. But something beautiful happens when you let go of negative self-talk & all the what ifs and I have to do this & my life isn't where so & so's is: you worry just a little bit less. You realize that the life you have planned won't be the one you live, and you start to walk a little bit taller & your head gets just a tad lighter. 

You Stop Comparing Yourself 
Ah, the little rascal we call comparison. It truly is the thief of joy, a vampire that will suck the life out of you for as long as it feels like it. In today's society it's virtually impossible to NEVER find yourself comparing things to someone else. Maybe your friend just got a killer promotion, that girl you follow on insta's hair is way better than (you think) yours could ever be, etc. But when those feelings of comparison arise, you'll learn to not let it get to you as much. 

You'll keep living your life, knowing you're not on a timeline and you won't get caught up in feeling sorry for yourself. You'll keep going. 

You Carry Yourself Differently
With a light. You'll see the world through more curious eyes, and you'll find yourself practicing more mindfulness, gratefulness, and compassion. 

Letting go is one of the least easy things you can do for yourself, but it's one of the most rewarding.

Consider this your monday reminder that it’s never too late to start. It’s never too late to do the thing you’ve been so afraid to do.

Normally I dread change, but recently I’ve been trying to welcome it with open arms. Our path is not our own, & change is just a part of it, sometimes for the worse, but sometimes for the so much better.

This time last year if you had told me that by this time now I’d have moved out, & then decided to start school again, & consequently moving BACK, I would’ve yelled at my future self. & yet, here I am.

My very long winded point is that you never know what’s going to happen, so you might as well just do it.

It's never too late.

Anxiety Grounding Practices That Work

Sometimes advice on anxiety can have the best intentions, but it just makes you feel worse in the end. 'Have you tried yoga?' (not to discredit yoga, it is amazing) 'Just stop worrying!' HA if only it were that easy! There are a lot of techniques that work, however, and the focus is on grounding

Here are the biggest ones I've found to work: (remember that everyone is different & what is helpful for someone else might not work for you! try different things until you find your groove)

1// Touch your shoulder, wiggle your fingers and toes. Touch whatever is closest to you. What does it feel like? Tell yourself that you are here, in this moment.

2// Most of the time this one is known as '5, 4, 3, 2, 1' where you touch five things, smell four things, etc, but keeping up with numbers gets me out of focus, so I just do one thing for each sense. Inhale. What's the first thing you smell? Look around, the first thing you see? Etc. This is another way of getting back to yourself, remembering that you are present, in real time. 

& it's my go-to practice, because it HELPS most of the time!

3// Instead of trying to shove it away, acknowledge the anxiety is there and see if you can pinpoint why. Look around, and remind yourself that nothing bad is actually happening. Focus on your breath and the fact that your heart is beating. You're okay. Sometimes there is no why, & that's okay. Still focus on your breath, your heartbeat.   

4// Sometimes the last thing you want to do in the middle of an anxiety attack is breathe, but a good breathing exercise can be key. Breathe in for four breaths, hold for seven, and breathe out for eight. It seems impossible, but focusing on the count can help you get back to the present. Repeat until you feel calmer. 

The recurring theme in all these practices is coming back to the present. That is key when anxiety hits, because it makes us feel out of control, like we don't know what's happening anymore and all logic is out the window. But the reality is, you're here, and you're okay.

Faded Jeans & Mules

You walk into your closet, guns blazing, ready to put together an insta-worthy outfit. But suddenly everything looks the same, you just wore that last week, you're not feeling that trend anymore, and then it hits you.

You're uninspired, in a rut. Sound familiar?

Style ruts happen to the best of us sometimes. I've been bitten by the uninspired bug lately, and the bite stings. Luckily, if you've got some armor, you'll be able to fight back with a vengeance. Here are my tips to get out of your rut & breathe new life into your wardrobe:

Getting Out Of A Style Rut | With Dignity & Coffee

Find A Style Icon
A style icon is someone you look to as a source of inspiration. Normally they will be someone of similar body type and someone who's style you really like and can envision on yourself. However, if someone's style really speaks to you & they have a totally different body type, that's okay too.

For me, my biggest icons are Rachel Bilson, Lauren Conrad, Julia from Gal Meets Glam, & Alexa Chung. If you've already got yourself some icons, you're a step ahead! Always be searching pinterest, instagram, blogs & magazines for their latest looks, and think of how you can make them your own.

Put Together A Mood Board
As an extremely visual person, mood boards are a bit of an obsession for me. Anytime you're in need of some inspiration, scour pinterest (pinterest is our bff in this post) of your style icons & any looks or pieces that speak to you. Search pins of key trends and pieces that you feel are you. For me that's denim, stripes, dresses,.... etc.

I save all the photos for a particular board into a folder on my computer, then put it all together easily through the collage maker in google photos. AAAND DONE! Now you can save your mood board as your desktop background, print & out & hang it on your wall, in your closet, anywhere you'll see it in times of trouble.

Find Newness In What You Have
I'll be the first to say: sometimes ya gotta go back to the basics. Pick a couple of key pieces to make a capsule of sorts: maybe it's a pair of jeans or a dress or a blouse you feel you've worn a thousand times. Separate it, look at your mood board, & dream up new ways to put together a look with it. Sometimes all it takes is a fresh perspective to get the creative juices goin'.

Now that you have some tips, go & put them into action the next time you're in a rut & you'll be out in no time! And if you're still shaking your head, thinking there's no hope, don't forget about virtual styling.... (how's that for a segue?)

Hey, hello, happy Monday! I've spent the first week of 2018 reflecting & planning, and of course that includes planning blog content. SO I wanted to give you a little rundown & heads up of what I've got cooking up this year, because I'm feeling inspired & ready to WRITE.

Looking back on the heart of WDAC, it's an all-inclusive place for you, the reader, to come & feel inspired, learn new things, & feel warm and fuzzies. Sharing my style & tips is one of my favorite topics to create content for, & I want to continue that.

According to my demographic, the majority of my readers are like me: millennial age, female, & most likely don't have the budget for haute couture. So, I want to continue focusing on budget style & homeware bits, because that's what I look for in content. Things I can relate to, and I always want you to feel connected to the content you're reading/ watching.

 There's a reason there's a band named after it: plain white tee's are a wardrobe staple, one that my wardrobe was sorely missing. That is, until, I found this chiffon number that is SO MUCH more than a white tee.

It's actually not even a tee- its chiffon texture gives it a dressier feel, & I love pairing it with a denim skirt (because denim) & a scarf. But it would also be chic with a pair of dark wash jeans & heels, thrown over a leather mini... there are so many different options!

Inside My 2018 Bullet Journal

As you might remember from this post, last year I started bullet journaling. I've always been the type of person that needs to plan & write things out, otherwise things get so disorganized in my brain & I'm running around like a madwoman trying to remember what day it is & I've probably forgotten to eat breakfast. (okay, I'm not THAT bad. but close)

Bullet journaling has really helped me stay on track of things, and the thing I love most about it is it's totally customizable, tailored to your needs. It's YOURS. I like a minimalistic theme with a bit of washi tape & colored pen splash every now & then. 

Starting out with an index in the beginning of the journal is very helpful; instead of flipping through until you find what you need, it's all layed out for you.

This year I decided to have a page for my yearly goals, as writing them down is an important part of the new year for me. Something I'm always wanting to do is read more, so for this year I added a book list, where I can track books that are on my to-read list & when I read them, as well as books not on the list. 

& finally, as a main point of the journal, monthly & weekly spreads add personalization to plans, appointments, etc.

I haven't got much in my weekly spreads yet, as it is only week one of fifty-two, but my instagram is sure to be full of them soon. I'm excited about this years' journal, now that I've done it long enough to get most of the kinks out & find out what suits me.

LOVE in 2018

I’m sure you’ve heard all the cheesy lines about New Year’s Day: it’s a blank novel, a chance for 365 beginnings, fresh start! & all that jazz. Sure, it’s a bit on the cheese, those are the things I love most about the new year. You can be a whole new person if you want. 

Last year is in the past. 

Each year I try to pick a word or phrase as a sort of mantra, something to remind me of my intentions for the year.

In light of the absolute MESS that was 2017, (from the world’s standpoint, at least) the word on my mind is love.

I strive to be the kind of person who loves freely & bravely, like those drunk girls you meet in the bathroom, but sober. I strive to be it because love is so what the world needs. The world needs people who love recklessly, people who fight injustice and who will stand up for mankind. We need to not only love ourselves, but love others. Spread your love out into the world & never stop.

Maybe, just maybe, it’s all we need.
