LET’S TALK ABOUT JAMEELA JAMIL AND DIET CULTURE

Midi Skirt & Sweatshirt

I’ve never watched the good place (I know... don’t @ me) but boy do I know who Jameela Jamil is, if not from gifs and commercials then from her recent Instagram posts condemning the sensation of the ~detox tea~ that so many celebrities & content creators have been promoting this past year.

Let's Talk About Diet Culture

The products have always seemed scammy to me, and it grinds my gears every time I see an influential person shelling one. (Shelling? Shilling? Anyway) I thought with all the research that we’ve done into health it was pretty much common knowledge that none of the ~quick fixes~ work, but people with influence are claiming otherwise.

As an eating disorder survivor I’m telling you IT DOESN’T WORK. There are no quick fixes, no tea that makes you have washboard abs, no gummies that suppress your appetite... none of it.

The diet culture of instagram and IRL is tiring and quite frankly, BS. Why do we spend so much of our time trying to ~get fit~ for bikini season or worrying about the piece of cake you ate at a friend’s birthday or comparing ourselves to the filters of social media? Things like this are partly to blame, and sadly, I don’t see the trend going anywhere for the moment. I don’t have the answers on how to fix it other than rejecting the notion that we need anything other than a balanced diet & a workout routine to stay in shape. Reject the notion that there is a certain body type to attain.

& please, if you ever see me promoting tummy tea, feel free to call Jameela.
